Understanding IRMAA Brackets

If you’re enrolled in Medicare, understanding the Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amounts (irmaa) is crucial. Don’t worry, we’ll guide you through the 2023 IRMAA brackets and how they may impact your Medicare premiums – the standard Part B monthly premium for 2024 is $174.70. We’ll break down what the 2023 IRMAA brackets are and how they can affect your Medicare coverage.

The standard Part B monthly premium for 2024 is $174.70. Those with higher incomes, though, could be on the hook for more due to the IRMAA surcharge. In fact, Medicare recipients with incomes exceeding certain thresholds will shell out a premium between $244.60 and $594.00 for Part B in 2024.Essentially, an ‘initial determination’ about your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) determines whether or not you’ll be hit with this extra charge on top of your regular Medicare plans premium.

An Overview of The IRMAA Bracket System

Much like tax brackets that decide how much income tax you owe based on earnings levels; similarly, there are several different “brackets” when it comes to paying for Parts B and D coverage under Medicare via these additional fees known as ‘IRMAAs’.In general terms: if your MAGI crosses over into one of these upper-income tiers then congratulations – but brace yourself. You’re now considered part of the club referred to as “higher-income beneficiaries”. And this means increased costs.

Your Modified Adjusted Gross Income / Taxable Income Matters

To figure out where exactly within these brackets someone falls under would require delving deep into their financial details – specifically looking at their modified adjusted gross income (MAGI).

Why does MAGI matter?

Because it’s a sum of your adjusted gross income plus any tax-exempt interest, essentially reflecting the true wealth you’ve amassed over time. The higher this figure, the more likely you’ll find yourself in one of those dreaded higher IRMAA brackets.Examples of Income used to calculate your MAGE:

Medicare 2024 IRMAA Brackets: Amounts and How

With the announcement of the August CPI-U, the 2024 Brackets are official and they will increase by over 5.00% to start at $103,000 for an individual.

Now please keep in mind that at any point between now and the beginning of the 2024 Congress or the current Presidential Administration can alter these Medicare irmaa Brackets, but if they do not then there will be at least a little bit of good news for seniors.

How the IRMAA Brackets adjust:

When Congress created Medicare IRMAA back in 2003 through the passing of the Medicare Moderniztion Act, they ruled that the IRMAA Brackets would adjust by

“The percentage (if any) by which the average of the Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (United States city average) for the 12-month period ending with August of the preceding calendar year exceeds such average for the 12-month period.”

So, if the CPI-U at the end of August of the current year is greater than the previous August then the IRMAA Brackets will increase. Note the inflation rate does not determine IRMAA costs.

By the way there is no language that would stop the IRMAA Brackets from going down if the CPI-U would actually deflate from year to year.

In terms of the all the Thresholds within the IRMAA Brackets, due to the passing of the Bi-Partisan Budget Act of 2018 the 5th Threshold in the IRMAA Brackets will not adjust for inflation until 2028.

What is IRMAA:

IRMAA is short for Medicare’s Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount which is according to the Code of Federal Regulations:

“An amount that you will pay for your Medicare Part B and D coverage when your modified adjusted gross income is above the certain thresholds.”

IRMAA is a tax on your income through Medicare Part B and Part D coverage if you have too much income while in retirement.

IRMAA - Medicare Logo

Will you actually enter IRMAA:

According to the 2022 Medicare Board of Trustees Report, currently, there are over 6.8 million people in IRMAA. These people in IRMAA make up 16.63% of all eligible Medicare beneficiaries.

By 2031, according to recent reports the number of people in IRMAA will double to 13.8 million eligible people in IRMAA.

IRMAA is a revenue generator for both the Medicare and Social Security programs.

For the Medicare program, IRMAA is an added cost that the person in it must pay. This added cost provides more money each year for the program.

As for Social Security, according to Congress, all IRMAA costs are automatically deducted from any Social Security benefit a person is receiving. Thus, for those who enter IRMAA, Social Security has to pay out less to them which reduces that program’s obligation to pay benefits.

Indexed Universal Life vs Roth IRA (iul vs roth ira): In-Depth Analysis

You’re standing at a financial crossroads. In one direction, the path of Indexed Universal Life vs Roth Ira, glimmers with potential and promise. On the other side, lies the well-trodden road of traditional retirement Planning options like social security or term life policies. You’ve got some hard-earned money to invest in your future but uncertainty looms large – which route do you take? Would you venture down an unfamiliar path that could lead to unprecedented growth or stick with what’s tried-and-tested?

This post is your trusty compass for this journey. It’ll help demystify Indexed Universal Life vs Roth IRA, compare their unique features, explore tax implications, discuss benefits like lifelong coverage versus tax-free distributions.

Don’t sweat it, this choice might not be as tough as you think.Understanding IUL and Roth IRA PoliciesThe financial world is packed with tools to help you prepare for retirement. Two of these, indexed universal life (IUL) insurance and the Roth Individual Retirement Account (IRA), offer unique benefits that can shape your retirement planning.

Defining Indexed Universal Life

An IUL is a type of permanent life insurance policy. Unlike term life policies, which only provide coverage for a specific period, an IUL offers lifelong protection. This type of universal life policy does more than just give out death benefits tax-free though—it also accumulates cash value over time. This means part of your premium payments go into a separate account within the policy where it has potential growth based on market upswings in specific economic sectors.IULs aren’t relying solely on stock market performance either—they come with minimum guaranteed earned rates to ensure some level of growth even during market downturns.

Defining Roth IRA

Roth IRAs work differently but share the goal of helping you secure future finances. They are essentially retirement accounts allowing individuals to save post-tax money for their golden years—money that grows tax-free as long as certain conditions are met.A big perk here is when it’s time to start drawing down those savings after age 59½—the payouts from this retirement plan, including earnings, are typically free from federal Income taxes since they were funded by post-tax dollars initially deposited into the account.

Furthermore, unlike traditional IRAs or other types of pre-taxed retirements accounts, Roth IRAs don’t have required minimum distributions (RMDs), letting your account grow for as long as you like.Key Differences between Indexed Universal Life and Roth IRAWhen it comes to IULs and Roth IRAs, they play by different rules. Sure, you’ve got some wiggle room with your IUL premium payments, but when it comes to yearly contributions for a Roth IRA, that’s a whole other ball game.

Ask a financial coach: What types of savings buckets should I have?

Saving money is hard. We get it. The truth is, most of us never feel like we have “extra” cash lying around that we can just hide away in a savings account. So, if you’re wondering how to start, congratulations. That’s an important first step to creating a budget and savings plan to help you manage your financial future.

GIVE YOUR MONEY A JOB

Look at the money you have and give every dollar a single job. Set money aside money for bills, groceries, gas, energy bills, utilities, and phones—all your monthly expenses. As you track your spending, you’ll see where the money goes and get a clear picture of what’s left for non-monthly expenses.

Paying closer attention to your spending habits will also help you identify spending that may not be necessary or important. Can you unsubscribe from some of those streaming service apps? Do you actually use that gym membership? Are those impulse buys on Amazon really that important? As you dial this nonessential spending in, your savings will increase.Consider the following groups of expenses when it comes to savings.

THINGS YOU HAVE TO SAVE FOR

These are non-monthly expenses that you know will occur at some point. Some of them are entirely predictable, and others are not.

Examples of both types include:

Predictable Non-Monthly Expenses

  • Annual car registration
  • Holiday shopping
  • Annual subscriptions

Unpredictable Non-Monthly Expenses

  • Car repairs
  • Medical and dental bills
  • Vet bills

THINGS YOU WANT TO SAVE FOR

Now that you’ve covered the essentials, let’s get down to the fun. Start by identifying the Things you want to save for. Consider starting small, like saving for new clothing or tickets to a show you really want to see. But you can start Planning for a trip to Paris or a ski vacation in Aspen too. Set up your accounts, and watch the balances grow. Your budget can help you make this happen.

Setting up Your Sub-Accounts

Determining your savings categories will help you budget accordingly so you can track your progress and know where you’re at when you need to access funds to pay a bill or deal with a problem.

Consider the following categories to start:

Emergency savings

Ideally, setting aside three to six months of Income in case of a job loss or disaster would be great. But it’s a lot. A $1, 000 emergency fund is a good place to start but consider aiming higher once you get there. If you’re risk-averse, a bigger emergency fund category can give you more peace of mind. If you have large financial responsibilities like kids or a house that needs maintenance or repairs, a bigger emergency fund might make sense.

Health and medical savings

Set aside funds to cover copays, uncovered balances, prescriptions, eyeglasses, elective treatments, and other cash outlays that health insurance doesn’t pay in full. Consider a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA). Both are designed to help you cover qualified medical expenses, but they are different.

What is an HSA?

Designed to cover qualified medical expenses, an HSA can either be sponsored by an employer or opened by an individual. To open an HSA, you must:

  • Be covered under a qualified high-deductible healthcare plan (HDHP)
  • Not be covered by Medicare or any plan that is not a qualified HDHP
  • Not be claimed as a dependent

HSA contribution limits for 2024 are $4, 150 for single individuals and $8, 300 for families.

What is an FSA?

An FSA also allows you to save for medical expenses, but you don’t need to be enrolled in a high-deductible plan to qualify. Your employer only has to offer an FSA benefit. The FSA contribution limit for 2024 is $3, 200 regardless of whether it’s for an individual or a family..

CAR REPAIR OR NEW CAR SAVINGS

This one’s pretty straightforward. If you own an older car that requires regular maintenance, set aside enough to cover expected repairs, oil changes, tires, wiper blades, etc. Consider setting more aside in case a big repair is necessary. There are reliable estimates for annual car repair costs online. You may also consider setting aside funds for a new car down payment if that’s your goal.

Calculate the price and decide what you can afford. The larger the down payment the lower your monthly loan payment will be.Have a question for our Canopy financial coaches? Sign up for a financial coaching session today by clicking the link below. Canopy Credit Union

PFAs And Ground Water In Airway Heights

Understanding Airway Heights PFAS Contamination

Airway Heights, Washington, sits next to Fairchild Air Force Base. This proximity unfortunately led to PFAS contamination in the city’s drinking water. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) considers PFAS Levels in drinking water when selecting sites for exposure assessments. Airway Heights was chosen due to AFFF (aqueous film-forming foam) used for firefighter training at the base since the 1970s. The foam seeped into the groundwater, affecting nearby municipal wells. Is Airway Heights Water Safe Now?The good news is that action was taken quickly. When PFAS were detected in May 2017, contaminated wells were shut down. Residents received bottled water until the issue was resolved in June 2017.

Currently, Airway Heights water meets the EPA’s 2016 health advisory for PFAS. The city has even brought some wells back online, equipped with treatment systems to continuously remove any remaining PFAS.The ATSDR investigated the impact by collecting samples and data from 333 residents across 168 households. They discovered Airway Heights residents had PFAS blood levels up to 56 times higher than the National average, linked to past contamination. However, water samples collected in 2019 by the EPA showed levels below health advisories.

Health Risks of PFAS Exposure

PFAS health risks aren’t immediate, but long-term exposure can have serious consequences. Here are some potential effects:

  • Cancers: Long-term exposure may increase the risk of kidney and testicular cancers.
  • Liver Damage: PFOA and PFOS exposure have been linked to liver damage in humans and animals.
  • Hormonal Disruption: These chemicals can disrupt the endocrine system, leading to hormonal imbalances.Immune System Effects: Exposure may weaken the immune system.
  • Developmental Effects: Prenatal exposure may harm fetal development.
  • Reproductive Issues: Exposure may affect fertility, pregnancy, and hormone levels.
  • Chronic Health Conditions: Long-term exposure may be linked to thyroid disorders, cholesterol problems, and metabolic syndrome.
  • Neurological Effects: Studies suggest PFAS exposure may contribute to neurological disorders.

Taking Action to Protect Yourself

While government agencies address contamination, residents can take steps to minimize exposure, especially those near military bases or heavy industry:

  • Certified Water Filters: Install and maintain a filter certified to remove PFOA and PFOS (NSF/ANSI Standard 53 or 58).
  • Test Private Wells: Consider testing private wells for PFAS contamination. Contact your local health department or a certified lab for assistance.
  • Minimize Exposure: Avoid using contaminated water for drinking or cooking until the issue is resolved.
  • Boil Water with Caution: Boiling doesn’t remove PFAS and may concentrate them. Avoid extended boiling.
  • Stay Informed: Follow water quality updates from local authorities and heed their advice.
  • Avoid Contaminated Water Recreation: Refrain from swimming or recreation in potentially contaminated water bodies.

Report Concerns: Notify your local water utility or environmental agency if you suspect PFAS contamination.

Government Intervention and Regulation

Municipal water system operators are continuously monitoring PFAS concentrations to ensure they stay below EPA limits. Additionally, the ATSDR met with residents in 2022 to discuss PFAS exposure and held discussions with healthcare providers to better serve the community’s health needs.

As a citizen, you can advocate for measures to reduce pollution from factories, farms, and waste disposal sites. Support cleanup efforts and initiatives focused on preventing further contamination. Early detection through proactive testing can significantly reduce exposure risks.

Municipal Water Systems Response

Municipal water facilities are now required to perform regular PFAS testing for public water supplies. Alternative treatment technologies are also being investigated as a potentially less expensive option compared to traditional filtration systems. The Department of Defense has even funded filtration systems for some private wells with high contamination levels.

Individual Protective Measures

Staying informed is the first step. Learn about PFAS exposure sources and consider installing a proper water filtration system. Explore options available from companies like H2O Solutions and EcoWater Systems. You can also find testing kits from SimpleLab.By following these steps, you can take control and minimize your personal exposure to PFAS.H2O Solutions

Possible 2025 IRMAA

For retirees in Medicare the tax of irmaa is happening and at a more alarming rate than ever before, so much so that the future of IRMAA will impact many more retirees than anyone is Planning for. The 2025 IRMAA brackets are expected to affect even more retirees than the current brackets. Each IRMAA tier has a corresponding marginal tax rate that determines the additional premium part B and part D surcharges.

In 2007, when IRMAA first came into existence, roughly 1.7 million Medicare beneficiaries were hit with this tax.Today, in 2023, the amount of people in IRMAA is over a staggering 6.8 million. This is an increase of 9.00% annually from 2007 and the future doesn’t look like it will decrease either.

What is the Future of IRMAA?

According to recent reports from the Trustees of Medicare, by 2030 there will be at least 12.8 million or 25% of all eligible Medicare beneficiaries in IRMAA.This amount of Medicare beneficiaries who will be in IRMAA, according to the Trustees, must occur, regardless of what the IRMAA thresholds may become as the program itself (Medicare) will be insolvent in just a few years without it.

IRMAA is simply a revenue source for both the Medicare and Social Security programs, without it both programs will be in serious jeopardy. The Social Security Administration uses your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) to determine your IRMAA tier and corresponding marginal tax rate.

What is IRMAA?

IRMAA, short for Medicare’s Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount, is a surcharge on to of Medicare Part B and D premiums for those who earn to much income. The income-related monthly adjustment amount (IRMAA) is based on your modified adjusted gross income.

IRMAA is a tax on income. If you earn an income over a certain limit, then your Medicare premiums will increase accordingly. The more you make in oncome the higher your premiums will be. Your adjusted gross income, as reported on your tax return, is used to determine if you are subject to the income-related monthly adjustment amount. The marginal tax rate for IRMAA can be as high as 85% for the highest income tier.

Compounding this issue of IRMAA and its surcharges is that any surcharges you are hit by will reduce your Social Security benefit too. You pay for your IRMAA surcharges through your Social Security benefit. So, the more income you earn in Retirement the more your Medicare premiums will be and the lower your Social Security benefit will be too. For married couples filing jointly, the IRMAA threshold is higher than for single filers. The Social Security Administration determines your IRMAA tier and premium part B and D surcharges based on your taxable income.
